TRENTON ---- An early morning shooting on Southard Street left one man dead and another critically injured, police said. More than 20 bullet casings littered the ground on the 1st block of Southard Street Friday morning, a grisly reminder of what is the fourth homicide in less than three weeks.

Police said multiple shots were fired at approximately 2 a.m. in the area of Southard and Monmouth Street, near the Catholic Charities building. Three of the shooting victims drove themselves to Capital Health at Fuld, where one was pronounced dead and another admitted in critical condition. Police said the third individual was uninjured. Nearby residents said they were shocked and startled upon hearing the early-morning gunshots in their neighborhood.

"I didn't know what to think," said one 27-year-old father, who said he feared for his sleeping 7-year-old son. "I threw myself on the floor." He said he heard at least 10 gunshots and someone shout, "Don't come around here again."
"When everything was finished I came out. It was empty," he said, adding he saw no evidence of violence besides the casings littering the sidewalk in front of his home. Another neighbor, 45-year-old Danny Allen, was also awake at the time of the shooting. "I heard something going boom, boom, boom," he said. "I didn't know if it was gunshots or fireworks. My first thought is, somebody's out there shooting." Both residents said there's is a quiet neighborhood not usually prone to such incidents, leaving them all the more shocked at the violence that unfolded in front of their doorsteps. "This is the first time it's happened here," the father said. Friday morning's incident represents the second deadly shooting this week alone. One man was killed and another critically injured in a Monday night shooting on South Broad Street that police said was drug-motivated.
